11:55 pm: Success. Hoodstream comes through via the butterroom stream. From watching his vid stream, butterroom is a dude with a camera positioned half way up between mike and fishman. During set break the link restarted and you could hear him announce he was “now filming live”. Everyone cheered. His stream is the only reliable one (at this point) and is going strong. The chat associated with this site is somewhat amusing but not worth participation.

11:09 pm: all streams are down, and updates few and far between. Since the stream of information has stopped, I will too. Next mission is to post links to free audio downloads that surface.

Stream Phish Live at Red Rocks

I am one of the many people who lost out on the Phish Red Rocks sweepstakes. Living vicariously through the Coventry crew and others via twitter, I’ve sifted through countless photos, videos and feeds over the last three days. These are the best bets to make your sunday a phunday, even if it’s via live stream.

Hoodstream seems to have a good set up, linking up 4-5 individual video streams live from red rocks. Keep in mind the multiple stream sources will slow everything down, forcing you to choose. Pick the best and go directly to that site.

Jamtopia had a fast stream last night. The on-screen chats are annoying, so click the “talking bubble” icon on the bottom right-hand corner of the video screen to hide it. I used this feed exclusively 8-1-09.

Finally, keep in mind that most of these streams have less than great visual quality, but damn good audio. The combo leaves something to desire, but hearing the band live is way better than reading setlists in silence/I-pod shuffle. Hope everyone at redrocks has a great Sunday show experience.

Scroll down to the bottom to see the latest updates!

Large amounts of cool people (and a few douche bags I’m sure) have converged on Red Rocks amphitheater this weekend for the historic four night phish run. I took the time off from work many moons ago, but lost out on the Phish Red Rocks sweepstakes and was unwilling to shell out the hundreds of dollars required to pay scalpers. Many people were scammed by these scalpers, included a female associate of mine, Nikki, who lives in boulder.

Two weeks ago, I remember seeing a facebook update in which she was “excited” to receive her tix via Fedex overnight shipping. Later, I read that the seller accidentally “sent” the tix to himself, of which she was frustrated and thought the seller was a fucking moron. I was not too surprised by this, working at the post office and all. Stoners filling out elaborate to/from forms for the overnight package = mistakes galore. I thought at the time that she was lucky the package didn’t end up at the dead letter office. She eventually posted that she received the tix but they were fakes. How she determined they were fakes eluded me, and I didn’t ask as to not further dwell on a sore subject.

I was also involved in a potential ticket pick up for my bud The Joker, who resides in Denver. Some dude down in Ft. Myers Florida claimed to have two tix for all four nights, and was willing to overnight them. Smelling tomfoolery, Joker called to enlist me in obtaining the tix. I was to play the role of his brother and drive down to pick up the tix. Btreoch found some scammer alerts about the guy to the whole mission was aborted. I was not looking forward to doing it at the time anyhow, but Joker said he would make it worth my while. Ended up working out as Joker scored tix somehow and is posting from the show along with Dr. Pauly and Change100.

The first night following the crew/crowds was interesting but anticlimactic. I hoped to stream the show via someones iphone, which I was able to do for Rothbury. This ended up not being the case, and I was left to updates from #phish and #redrocks.

Twitter has been particularly helpful in getting up to date information, pictures, and streams for these shows. I am impressed by the usefulness of twitter in this regard, and now have new evidence why twitter is not a “ego driven” website/service with no real purpose. It’s like having embedded reporters at shows in which I can call upon. In that spirit, I will continue to update this blog with cool and interesting photos/streams live from redrocks.

If your interested in a full recap or multiple quality sources, I suggest checking out @phishcoventry as well as the personal twitter accounts of the sites bloggers.

In the spirit of quality journalism, I will do my best to credit each photo!

I’ve discovered how to live stream the show finally, click here to see it. I must warn that this is a personal live stream site, so clicking on the above site during a phish show will most likely produce a phish show. Clicking on it at other times may produce just about anything. Lostndamaged should be credited for finding/providing this link.

It’s sometimes weird to see into other peoples lives like this, but what the hell. I’m a blogger, they’re live bloggin their experiences and linking them to twitter….its like that hot chick that changes in front of her window in my complex, whom I’m convinced wants me to watch. This dude (the wagger) is streaming through his blog, which is a damn good idea. Not really in a position to do this as I am running off my dads virgin mobile 3g internet hook up, which charges by transfer frequency??? Crazy concept. Props to this guy, for giving me a goal for tomorrow when I return home to my fully functional wi-fi connection. “The Wagger” has devoted an entire blog just to red rocks phish, and perhaps more shows in second half of tour. Check it out HERE

There are a bunch of douch bags trying to live link streaming audio, but they’re all falling on their faces. thebutterroom is one. Honesty, they’re prob not douche bags and I’m more like them then I want to admit.

Chalk Dust Torture by beatifulbuzz

A bunch of people are tweeting about this one. A blog called “Red, Green and Blue” has one man’s reflection of the history of Red Rocks being built, during FDR’s New Deal work program. It’s pretty cool and has some old photographs from before the amphitheater had lights, benches and a stage; it’s an apparent natural ampi-deal. He’s at the show, and he claims he will occasionally think about FDR and the New Deal amongst all the screaming fans and shenanigans.

USF & Craigslist

Best of USF CL, July 09

It’s nearly August, and the social seasons are changing. I’ve again become one with the ebb and flow of the University schedule, but this time its 365 a year, 8 to 5. These days, it’s orientation; bringing with it scores of young ladies (and dudes of course) taking the college plunge.

I think about the people that will be moving in, meeting up, and the sexy time occurrence ratio in the hundreds of dorm rooms that will seed itself in the future 30 days. The amount of casual sex within one-square mile has to be off the freaking charts during fall/spring semester, if the focus is the USF dorms. Spread it to 5 miles to include off campus apartments, and you’ve got Sodom and Gomorrah every three months on a constant regenerative cycle. No wonder I love living here.

I think craigslist has great utility. It makes me laugh more than many television shows. I have a habit of searching “USF” to see what kind of people are whoring themselves out, writing funny stories, or using CL to solicit weird businesses. Most of the funny ads are personals, with “pay to date” web sites providing alot of the fodder. They have land-grabbed “USF” tags to boost revenue (as discovered on an earlier investigatory blog post).

I record funny posts for laughs and choose winners. The categories are m4w, w4m, R&R, and MC. Look it up n00bs. (parental warning, the first chick mostly). The following are my “best of” for USF related CL posts for July 2009.

You’re all working diligently to maintain your figures while I’m working hard to get in shape. I usually bring my own visual entertainment, but when I look away and see your gracious form, my heartbeat jumps to 170. Alas, I then have to refocus on my cardio or risk passing out.

I’m single and we’ve probably exchanged pleasantries, maybe even a smile, but I know this is your ssanctuary and the last thing you need is someone like me hitting on you. I’d like nothing better than to get to know you, after all, working out with a friend is better than doing so alone. I’ve even thought of asking you to join me for a relaxing cup of coffee after a long workout, but I know every single one of you is more or less out of my league.

Until we meet, I’m letting my imagination fill in the blanks. Sometimes I’ll count the freckles on your shoulders to try to guess how much you like the outdoors, while at other times I’ll keep track of which machines you use so I can figure out what you don’t like about yourselves. It’s all innocent, I swear.

I would also like to thank you for providing me with the motivation to keep going day after day; I couldn’t have lost the first 25lbs without you. I hope the next 25 melt away just as fast with your assistance.

YouTube DMCA Counter-Notification

Sir or Madam:

I am writing in response to a copyright infringement notification letter sent to me by your company on July 22, 2009. The letter is titled: “video removed: Copyright Infringement”.

The letter states that my video: “Boston Crusaders 2009 Orlando: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmqfqTS6SXM” was flagged by a third party, drum corps international (DCI). The letter goes on to state that DCI claims my video is infringing on a copyright, and therefore your company saw fit to remove said video.

I am confused as to how exactly my video constitutes copyright infringement. I dispute that my video is copyright infringement on the following grounds:

1)I captured all the audio and video using my personal video camera, a sony digital DCR-TRV250 NTSC. No outside source video or audio was used in the video under dispute.

2)The video was captured in a public place, outside of the competition location where video cameras were prohibited. I set the youtube map locator for this video at the closest approximate location: geo:lat=28.53785797530089 geo:lon=-81.40070915222168

3)I was granted verbal permission by the Boston Crusaders staff on site to record prior to capturing any video or audio.

4)The video in question is one of many that exist on youtube, that is, a “parking lot” rehearsal video taken prior to a competitive DCI performance. I question why my video was singled out and removed when hundreds like it continue to enjoy full viewing status on youtube.

5)I was provided no rationale on how my video infringes on a copyright, nor provided with a record of said copyright. I was simply told I was in violation and my video removed with no real explanation.

Thus, I do not believe the above discussed video is in violation of copyright infringement. I respectfully request that your company rescind its claim that I am in violation and return the above discussed video to full acceptable status on my youtube page.

If in fact my video is in violation of copyright infringement, I would appreciate a more detailed explanation of why.

I consent to the jurisdiction of Federal District Court for the judicial district in which your address my located, and I will accept service of process from the person who provided notification under subsection (c)(1)(C) or an agent of such person.

I swear, under penalty of perjury, that I have a good faith belief that the material was removed or disabled as a result of a mistake or misidentification of the material to be removed or disabled.

I hope we can come to an amicable solution for all parties involved in this matter.

Sincerely

Broseph (used my real name)

Conclusions

WTF DCI? I am making no profit off of my youtube site. I make these vids because a)as an alumni, going to shows is enjoyable and taking video allows me to share the enjoyment b)the musicians I video appreciate it and its fun to meet new people. Last year people that appeared on my vids contacted me to thank me for giving them the memory on video. For some corps/instruments, they don’t get videoed much, if at all, and sometimes my vids are the only ones. To be perfectly clear, DCI needs to back off and stop trying to claim everything that’s associated with the activity is their property. That;s not the legal reality. Boston crusaders, if your behind all of this, double what I just said, but to you.

Phish Discovery

July 21, 2009

carrie brownstein

I consider myself late to the phish game. I wish I would have known their music in High School back in the late nineties. Turns out I did not really listen until 2004. I’d heard them, but never listened. I went to sound exchange that spring with the intention to buy a phish cd. Knowing nothing, I grabbed 5 used cds and took them to the stores listen station. I settled on Picture of Nectar; Llama was my first song.

When I learned of former sleater-kinney associate Carrie Brownstein’s recent discovery/blog about phish, it made me smile and feel like I wasn’t the only one. Hearing what other people do is so damn interesting.

Buying My First Ever Phish CDs from Carrie Brownstein on Vimeo.

She held a meeting with phish people at a bar and seemed overwhelmed by how intense the phans were, joking “I now own more phish than any other band” after people showered her with their fav shows.

Props to you, Ms. Brownstein; for just now discovering phish and not being afraid to tell people (via an NPR blog, sweet gig by the way). Also, I wish I could really “embed” your vids; not this cheap, rip-off link deal.

Justin Masterson

July 20, 2009

justin mastersons wife

I wrote a fictional story based on true events during this years spring training. Tampa bay has a plethora of minor league squads and spring training facilities, and catching games early in the year is something I always try to do.

The story, entitled Justin Masterson, got put on Dr. Pauly’s literary blog, Truckin.

In the story, one is led to believe that all this stuff is true. I can assure everyone most of it isn’t. I did meet justin masterson’s wife and her friend, and did think her friend was hot. But they basically blew me off. I also did meet some girls in bosox gear by the third base line and got some suntan lotion from them. We also went to a Mexican place afterwords, but it was just alan and I. I hope you read the story on truckin, and the other people who were selected.

The story I wrote is the “best of all possible” scenarios, and is really just me imagining what that would be. I’ve added truckin to my blog roll, as well as my buddy tender branson’s blog, write.click.cook.listen. Both worth checking out.

University of South Florida

July 18, 2009

usf grl

My alma mater, USF has become more of a home than a school in many senses of the word.

I first heard of the university of south florida in the mid 90’s. My mother and father both aspired to pursue further education for (I think) monetary reasons.

Moving from Chicagoland, my parents took a significant pay cut when we settled in Sarasota, FL (So I’m told, and have grown to learn). My knowledge of my parents occupation at this time (85-92) ranges from stable to unknown.

I am pretty confident in knowing my mother worked at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, hired in 1985, and continued to work until the move to San Diego in the early 2000’s.

My father’s work was a mystery for the most part. I am confident in that he sold Steel in IL prior to our relocation to FL. I also heard that galveston, TX was an option, in that my father had a job opportunity there, and the eventual choice for Mom and Dad was Sarasota or Galveston, settling on Sarasota. I think they made the right choice.

When I was in middle school (1991-1995), my mother enrolled in a masters of public health program at USF.  She worked at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, which allowed for tuition reimbursement.

This choice meant several changes in our lives. Mom worked full time, and at night she would go to USF.  Living in Sarasota, this meant mom commuted an hour+ to tampa twice a week.

DCI ORLANDO, II

July 18, 2009

I left everyone last time talking about my experience at the citrus bowl, in the rain, on july 11th. I had a run in w/a drum tech, got lost on my way out, met up w/a lady friend, saw some downtown orlando nightlife, slept in a 26th floor condo, went to breakfast at a sweet diner, and drove the neighbors car back to my place in Tampa. I’m going to try and cover some of the funnier details, beginning with close of the DCI show.

I was bouncing between lines in poor lighting conditions. Prior to this, I considered myself a knowledgeable DCI fan, and was confident that when I go see a line warm up, I can pretty much know/figure out what corps I’m watching. Wrong. The darkness worked me into ignorance, and as I approached this line, I had no idea who I was taping. All I knew was they were ramming notes and I liked it. First half is triplet roll exercise, which is a bit tedious. Second half they are playing book and marching, really letting loose.

I had a 44 oz syrofome cup and a backpack full of beer. I could fit 2-3 coors light per serving. When I was taping the above shown video, I was pretty intoxicated. I had been sitting for two hours waiting for the rain to stop and indulged a bit. Another line down the street caught my attention and I walked toward them. On the walk over, I spotted an Orlando motorcycle cop observing the crowds. It was noisy as hell by traditional standards; horn lines/drum lines all over the place. In this next vid, I stashed my beer on a deactivated portable street light. The beginning cracks me up; the instructions/language used to describe the rehearsal segments are confusing as fuck. Half the time, the even techs don’t know what gut is saying.

After these vids, I tried to catch the final line warming up. I was setting up and the tech hasseled me about taping. Here’s my recollection of the conversation:

Drum Tech: (to the drumline)…all right, check out the changes at C, and E4, inaudable….

Broseph: (moves to 20 ft out, lifts camera towards drumline)

Drum Tech: (to line) alright lets try the first segment….(notices broseph) Hey dude!? could you not video this right now? we’re learning something new.

Broseph: (nods at drum tech, closes camera, walks away)

Pretty cordial deal. I went and made the two above videos, came back, and figured they were done learning what ever new stuff they were working on, and videoing would be ok.

The fact that the question of whether its ok to video drumlines on public property is even brought up is a little weird. Its my camera, I can video if I want to. I admit that I was told once not to video, but I guess I feel like I can video anything I want. This of course comes with the risk that the person your videoing may take your camera and break it. I accept those risks and act accordingly; sometimes I take risks because I think I can get away with it.

When I came back to video the second time I realized I was risking it. The drum tech saw me:

Drum Tech: (to drumline) ok let take that again….(sees broseph) Dude! No videoing!

Broseph: What? Are we good? Still No?

Drum Tech: No, man, no.

Broseph: Alright (shakes his head). You know you can’t stop us from doing what we want.

Drum Tech: What?!

Broseph: (Waves and walks off)

After that exchange, I was feeling pretty shunned. My intoxication was wearing a bit, and I decided to make my way out. I said good bye to Megan of crossmen fame and began my ride to downtown Orlando, to meet my special lady friend. I got totally lost on the way out. I decided to try and find a wireless hot spot at some shop or something, but that idea was aweful. I ended up calling my special lady friend and she had to spoon feed me in to her location. I was not a good directions follower. I went where I thought I should go, and ended up having to call back a second time due to mis-steps. Finally arriving at her building (a tall sky line symbol right down town), I circled it twice to try and find the parking garage entrance. Eventually after calling AGAIN, I discovered I had to go in, check w/ the door man, and then park in a separate, visitors level. It was like the maginot line in that building.

I got up to the 26th floor to find my friend owned a baller, celebrity rockstar condo. Its a corner unit with a great view of downtown AND lake eaola. Its a corner unit, so two walls are pure windows. We decided to make out and then go out, where we managed to hit 3 bars in one hour in downtown orlando.

I was never a fan of orlando. I certainly thought downtown orlando was weak. Damn was I wrong. Downtown Orlando is freaking badass. I could def live there and do well on any sort of social level. After our excursion we went back for some late night lovin, which was extended over the next couple hours. Niether of us remember passing out, which is a testament for a good night session.

The next morn we rose and she suggested a diner, which I loved. I was impressed at her knowledge of what I liked. We sat at the counter, moving in front of a party of 5 who could not get a seat. Afterwards we chatted for a bit, kissed and bid each other adeiu. I made it back to tampa without issue, although I was a bit paranoid.

My weekend was awesome. Traveling, DCI, beer, bars, girls, lovin, high views, diners, home; epic.
