Best of Craigslist: Festival 8

November 8, 2009

Phish and Craigslist are two of my favorite things. Every time I go to a large event such as a concert or sports contest, I check out the craigslist posts. People are whoring themselves out, making commentary or trying to fulfill an agenda. Missed connections is the funniest; I wrote a piece for the phish coventry blog about the phish festival and craigslist, a crazy event I just went to. Check it out here: Best of Craigslist: Fest 8

After posting this last night, my associate Btreoch emailed me with a Tampa missed connection about Indio. Unbelievable!! He made the comment that I probably posted it myself, but I suspect one of my Tampa friends saw my post and made it to fuck w/me. I responded on principle but I have yet to receive any reply.

11:17: Phish heads embedded in chicago report many, many people jumped the temporary fences for floor access. Less buzz about this show, so streams listed bellow are reliable.

8:18pm: Toyota Park is about 2/3′ds full at this point according to embedded twitter heads. Via stream I’ve been able to determine no show start yet.

One of my favorite people, discosis1 is in attendance and I am living vicariously through her updates.

11:55 pm: Success. Hoodstream comes through via the butterroom stream. From watching his vid stream, butterroom is a dude with a camera positioned half way up between mike and fishman. During set break the link restarted and you could hear him announce he was “now filming live”. Everyone cheered. His stream is the only reliable one (at this point) and is going strong. The chat associated with this site is somewhat amusing but not worth participation.

11:09 pm: all streams are down, and updates few and far between. Since the stream of information has stopped, I will too. Next mission is to post links to free audio downloads that surface.

10:56pm Streaming the show through my 70’s receiver, drinking red stripes and making exchanges. live stream information available here

Stream Phish Live at Red Rocks

I am one of the many people who lost out on the Phish Red Rocks sweepstakes. Living vicariously through the Coventry crew and others via twitter, I’ve sifted through countless photos, videos and feeds over the last three days. These are the best bets to make your sunday a phunday, even if it’s via live stream.

Hoodstream seems to have a good set up, linking up 4-5 individual video streams live from red rocks. Keep in mind the multiple stream sources will slow everything down, forcing you to choose. Pick the best and go directly to that site.

Jamtopia had a fast stream last night. The on-screen chats are annoying, so click the “talking bubble” icon on the bottom right-hand corner of the video screen to hide it. I used this feed exclusively 8-1-09.

Finally, keep in mind that most of these streams have less than great visual quality, but damn good audio. The combo leaves something to desire, but hearing the band live is way better than reading setlists in silence/I-pod shuffle. Hope everyone at redrocks has a great Sunday show experience.

Scroll down to the bottom to see the latest updates!

Large amounts of cool people (and a few douche bags I’m sure) have converged on Red Rocks amphitheater this weekend for the historic four night phish run. I took the time off from work many moons ago, but lost out on the Phish Red Rocks sweepstakes and was unwilling to shell out the hundreds of dollars required to pay scalpers. Many people were scammed by these scalpers, included a female associate of mine, Nikki, who lives in boulder.

Two weeks ago, I remember seeing a facebook update in which she was “excited” to receive her tix via Fedex overnight shipping. Later, I read that the seller accidentally “sent” the tix to himself, of which she was frustrated and thought the seller was a fucking moron. I was not too surprised by this, working at the post office and all. Stoners filling out elaborate to/from forms for the overnight package = mistakes galore. I thought at the time that she was lucky the package didn’t end up at the dead letter office. She eventually posted that she received the tix but they were fakes. How she determined they were fakes eluded me, and I didn’t ask as to not further dwell on a sore subject.

I was also involved in a potential ticket pick up for my bud The Joker, who resides in Denver. Some dude down in Ft. Myers Florida claimed to have two tix for all four nights, and was willing to overnight them. Smelling tomfoolery, Joker called to enlist me in obtaining the tix. I was to play the role of his brother and drive down to pick up the tix. Btreoch found some scammer alerts about the guy to the whole mission was aborted. I was not looking forward to doing it at the time anyhow, but Joker said he would make it worth my while. Ended up working out as Joker scored tix somehow and is posting from the show along with Dr. Pauly and Change100.

The first night following the crew/crowds was interesting but anticlimactic. I hoped to stream the show via someones iphone, which I was able to do for Rothbury. This ended up not being the case, and I was left to updates from #phish and #redrocks.

Twitter has been particularly helpful in getting up to date information, pictures, and streams for these shows. I am impressed by the usefulness of twitter in this regard, and now have new evidence why twitter is not a “ego driven” website/service with no real purpose. It’s like having embedded reporters at shows in which I can call upon. In that spirit, I will continue to update this blog with cool and interesting photos/streams live from redrocks.

If your interested in a full recap or multiple quality sources, I suggest checking out @phishcoventry as well as the personal twitter accounts of the sites bloggers.

In the spirit of quality journalism, I will do my best to credit each photo!

I’ve discovered how to live stream the show finally, click here to see it. I must warn that this is a personal live stream site, so clicking on the above site during a phish show will most likely produce a phish show. Clicking on it at other times may produce just about anything. Lostndamaged should be credited for finding/providing this link.

Lostndamaged also has a sweet collection of all his twitter photos/phish redrocks stuff on a rockin site called picfrog. It’s sometimes weird to see into other peoples lives like this, but what the hell. I’m a blogger, they’re live bloggin their experiences and linking them to twitter….its like that hot chick that changes in front of her window in my complex, whom I’m convinced wants me to watch. Same deal: if they didn’t want me to look, they wouldn’t show us. Check it out here: lostndamaged

This dude (the wagger) is streaming through his blog, which is a damn good idea. Not really in a position to do this as I am running off my dads virgin mobile 3g internet hook up, which charges by transfer frequency??? Crazy concept. Props to this guy, for giving me a goal for tomorrow when I return home to my fully functional wi-fi connection. “The Wagger” has devoted an entire blog just to red rocks phish, and perhaps more shows in second half of tour. Check it out HERE

There are a bunch of douch bags trying to live link streaming audio, but they’re all falling on their faces. thebutterroom is one. Honesty, they’re prob not douche bags and I’m more like them then I want to admit.

Chalk Dust Torture by beatifulbuzz

A bunch of people are tweeting about this one. A blog called “Red, Green and Blue” has one man’s reflection of the history of Red Rocks being built, during FDR’s New Deal work program. It’s pretty cool and has some old photographs from before the amphitheater had lights, benches and a stage; it’s an apparent natural ampi-deal. He’s at the show, and he claims he will occasionally think about FDR and the New Deal amongst all the screaming fans and shenanigans.

Phish Discovery

July 21, 2009

carrie brownstein

I consider myself late to the phish game. I wish I would have known their music in High School back in the late nineties. Turns out I did not really listen until 2004. I’d heard them, but never listened. I went to sound exchange that spring with the intention to buy a phish cd. Knowing nothing, I grabbed 5 used cds and took them to the stores listen station. I settled on Picture of Nectar; Llama was my first song.

When I learned of former sleater-kinney associate Carrie Brownstein’s recent discovery/blog about phish, it made me smile and feel like I wasn’t the only one. Hearing what other people do is so damn interesting.

Buying My First Ever Phish CDs from Carrie Brownstein on Vimeo.

She held a meeting with phish people at a bar and seemed overwhelmed by how intense the phans were, joking “I now own more phish than any other band” after people showered her with their fav shows.

Props to you, Ms. Brownstein; for just now discovering phish and not being afraid to tell people (via an NPR blog, sweet gig by the way). Also, I wish I could really “embed” your vids; not this cheap, rip-off link deal.
